Good afternoon Visual Arts students, parents and supporters! Did you know that Monday, March 17 was the first day of the last grading period of the 2024-25 school year? Read on for important info and updates for the remainder of the year.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

The PTSA's Summer Scholarship application is now open. 9th-11th grade students can get up to $500 toward a summer academic, performing or visual arts intensive or enrichment. To be eligible, both the student applicant and one parent must be current PTSA members; the applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 80 or higher; and the applicant must be accepted or enrolled into an artistic or academic enrichment program and provide proof of acceptance or enrollment. Visit the PTSA Membership Toolkit for details on the scholarship and to read testimonials from previous recipients.

Students, be sure you check the online call board for crew opportunities through May including:

  • Dear Asian Youth: This exhibition at the Crow Museum explores the Asian American experience through the eyes of young artists. High school students are invited to submit artwork reflecting their interpretation of the theme “The Human Soul.” Entries are due April 1.
  • City of Dallas Water Conservation Art Contest: Visit the website for information on categories and prizes. Entries are due April 4. 
  • Youth Empowerment Festival: Submit art by April 11 and attend the event on April 26 to win up to $750. Drop off artwork to Ms. Read if you need assistance with delivery.

College Fair for upperclassmen: BTW College Advisors Dakari Butler and Anthony Mata are hosting a college fair on campus on Monday, March 24 in the MAT lobby during the upperclassman lunch period. Thirty colleges are scheduled to attend, and students can talk directly with college admissions officers. 

SENIOR SHOW #3

Senior Show #3 - Belle Epoque - is on view in the Hudson Gallery through April 4. The opening reception is Thursday, March 27 from 5-7 p.m. 

Come and celebrate seniors Kin Alexander, Phoebe Benton, Naira Churquina, Jenecah Hate, Emily Heng, Evelyn Holt, Jackson King, Mackenzie Nance, Sqye Pierce, Lola Saldana, Willow Solis, and Lucas Valles. 

The final senior show for the Class of 2025 will be on view in the Hudson Gallery beginning April 12. The opening reception is Thursday, April 24.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Visual Arts Guild has hosted Young American Talent, the annual juried arts competition for Texas high school students, for more than 30 years. This year, more than 1,100 submissions in 13 categories were received from students at 30 different high schools across Texas. On Tuesday, 145 students were selected as finalists. 

All are invited to the finalists' reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, May 8 from 6-8 p.m. in the Hudson Gallery on the BTW campus. 

To prepare for the exhibit, BTW parents and students are invited to volunteer on campus Saturday, May 3 from 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. as finalists drop off their art. Parents can also volunteer on Tuesday, May 5 and Wednesday, May 6 (if needed) to help with installation. Finally, parents and students can volunteer at BTW on Saturday, May 17 as students pick up their artwork.

AROUND BTW

The Dallas ISD virtual budget meeting is at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 24. District experts will discuss the budget process and highlights and answer questions. To register for the virtual meeting, visit www.dallasisd.org/budgetmeetings.

ELSEWHERE

The Tin District Spring Open Studios is Saturday, April 5 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. This is a chance to visit 35+ artist studios and four galleries in the Tin District, see work in progress, meet the makers, and collect work.
